View Full Version : Outsourced DNS Statistic?
Does anyone have a good source for information about the percentage of domain names in which DNS management is outsourced?
My gut feeling is the number has to be 85% or higher, it seems like most people use their ISP, hosting provider, or more frequently their registrar to manage DNS, and larger companies might use a service like UltraDNS, etc.
Thoughts?

Yes
I see it as stupid to run in house DNS unless you are a hosting company, in that case only do it for your clients. If for some reason your server goes down then DNS goes down too which could create problems over the next few days for your domain. Out source it to a company that has redundant servers, connections, etc.

That depends on many factors -- there are a lot of good reasons to maintain control of DNS in house. However, I agree for most people outsource DNS makes sense, though there are many hosting companies and ISPs that actually put the type of thought you are referring to into their DNS services.
Either way, that doesn't really answer my question :D.

I tend to agree with you (that's what I do, even with my clients' hosting), EXCEPT that some people actually LOVE doing it themselves, just like there are people growing their own tomatoes.
