A client of mine had this domain and it expired and now they can't renew it because the company that registered the domain wants an arm and a leg, but they haven't re-registered it.

Status: REDEMPTIONPERIOD
Updated Date: 24-apr-2003
Creation Date: 12-mar-2001
Expiration Date: 12-mar-2003

It expired on March 12, 2003, and on some whois servers it displays as "no match found" or "domain is available", however, when I attempt to register it or transfer it, it stats that the domain is currenty registered.

it was registered by a company using OpenSrs and when I do a WHOIS on opensrs.org for the domain, i get the following:

The domain submitted could not be found.

Any ideas? I appreciate it.

From the whois information you posted, your client's domain will very likely be available for registration again on 30 May 2003 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.

Great. How'd you figure that out?

I know they drop domains at 2PM (EST) but how'd you know the date?

Okay, the calculation is like this:

Most registrars would give their registrants a 30-42 days grace period after the Expiration Date to renew the expired domain. (Registrars have already renewed the domain upon expiry with the Registry, but are able to get their $6 refund within 45 days.) And with the new Redemption Grace Period, they are required to render an extra 30 days before actually deleting it. During the RGP, registrants are still eligible to redeem the name but for an extra cost of $85+ (depending on registrars).

In your case, the domain expired on 12 March 2003 and entered Redemption Period on 24 April 2003 (Updated Date), approximately 42 days after expiry. Add 30 days from there and the name will enter the Pending Delete status. For .com and .net, Verisign GRS (the registry) will make it available on the 6th day at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
