Godaddy appear to be sending renewal notices to domain technical contacts now as well as the billing contact. As we are tech contact on lots of domains that have been transferred away from us to Godaddy we are getting all these emails.

We can never be the correct people to be renewing these domainnames and we have no control over them to change the technical contact.

Of course, there are other risks associated with sending these notices to the wrong contacts.

I wouldn't exactly consider this to be spamming.

Just got another one:

Customer Number for this Account: 2836747

Dear Valued Go Daddy Customer,

This email is to notify you that some of your domain names are coming up for renewal in 60 days.

Thats not my customer account.
They have indiscrimately sent it to the technical contact not the billing contact.

This isnt spamming. When you sign up to use their service they will send you notices in order to allow you enough time to renew your domain. They will send it to not only the technical but the owner as well. This way they cover all the bases. Also, if for some reason that a domain gets swipped by someone else. GD has documentation to show that they sent the emails a number of times. This is to insure that the domain is renewed as well as legaly cover themselves.

That's what they'll say. Even if the intent *was* to spam, they'll be able to get away with that one.

How can a renewal notice be spam?

I can see if they were sending sales offers to the email address you would consider it spam, but to send a renewal notice is a service.

It's a fine line. Personally I'd consider it SPAM if sent to the technical contact.

Renewals should ideally go to the billing address or/and administrative address.

Just my 2 cents

Most renewal notices will get sent to the Administration contact and the Technical contact, Administration because they own it and the Technical contact because they generally control it (look after things) or actually did the registration on behalf of the owner in the first place.

If you are listed as the Technical contact and are getting the emails you can just ignore them or get in touch with the Admin contact and let them know, they might just appeciate it and come back to you for your service.

Well, spam or not, it is unfortunate and I would not want to be getting all those emails, especially in light of the volumns you must be working with.

You may not like that fact that you get a few renewal notices but it is definitely not spam. Look up the definition if you are unsure. As well, most people in the world that own domains have no idea what they do or how to use them. They simply hire a webmaster listed as technical and Admin contact. Personally I have helped customer that didn't know how to check their own email. Second, I have hundreds of domains with godaddy and have never received an email to the tech contact. I even checked with my account rep who advised they don't send emails to the tech contact.

Where are you getting this info from??

Also, if you have an example I would be happy to take it to my account rep to look at.
