View Full Version : .eu may not be possible if you are a reseller

The .eu registry is telling accredited registrars that they must not supply via resellers.

See this page:

http://www.eurid.eu/news/archive/reselingdomains

If this position holds you will not be able to resell .eu domains and companies like 123-reg.co.uk who have been taking preorders (withthe aim of running them trhough the Tucows system at sunrise) will not be able to fulfill those obligations unless they get accreditation.

It also means that if you resell domains for Enom or OpenSRS or any other registrar you will not be able to resell .eu.

The disadvantage for the registry is that their domains will not be as widely available and the extension may not take off in popularity.

:rant::rant::rant:
This is fairly typical of anything connected with the EU.
I can remember working on a European funded project in Mozambique and part of the contract was that we were only to use equipment manufactured by European companies.
Try buying a truly European laptop
We ended up with badge engineered ones which had benn "assembled" in London and were truly awful, when what we wanted were HP or Toshiba.
The HP was made in Europe but HP is of course an American company. :banghead:

It actually means that Tucows/OpenSRS is NOT able to sell .eu, since they only sell through resellers! Hmm ...

Yes, that sums up the current position.

Weird strategy.
I am trying to understand why they did that... to keep it pricey? :)

OK, they backed down.
Now they are saying that as long as the relationship between registrant and registrar is stated clearly in the agreement then they can have resellers.
As this is already the case for OpenSRS with .uk and .ca there will be no problems, but I think Enom will have difficulties as they do not force agreement to all the terms and conditions at registration and they do not have seperate registry contract with resellers for each TLD.
They have already been in trouble over .uk
