Anybody got any idea how much it costs to transer the registrant of a .co.uk domain currently held on register.com ?

I have a client who was working with a developer to build a site - the developer kindly registered the clients domain in their name :)

Although the developer agrees the client "owns" the name - until we transfer the registrant details we are beholden to him to make any DNS changes etc.

For example we asked 10 days ago to change the DNS to ours so we can resolve the address for the new site, and somehow he has managed to create a new A address but not changed the NS records - hence no website or mail (MX record is setup on our Nameservers !)

When you say transfer the registrant, do you mean transfer the domain from one
registrar to another (123Reg to 456Reg) or just transfer the domain to another
account within Register.com?

Back in the days when I handled domains to a large extent, to transfer a .co.uk it
was free. However, I did come across Namesco who charged £10-£20.

To transfer it to another registrar, ids still imagine all you have to do is give your
existing registrar the IPSTAG of your new registrar and allow anything up to 48
hours for it to appear on your control panel. On the other hand, to transfer the
domain to a different account you’d need to get the current registrant to contact
Register to initiate the transfer.

I use Hostndomains.com to handle my domains, and it costs about us$8.95 transfering a domain to them (change or registrar), and it includes 1 year of service. The best of all is that you have a Control Panel where to manage all your domains.

Don;t forget downtime...if you consider it a cost.

Most domain transfers are free and extend your current registration by one year. Control panel management is also available at most registrars.

I've seen hosts that transfer for "free" but actually you have to pay for another year on that domain. So its free, if you plan on keeping the domain for a year longer (which I would assume your going to do). I'd look around at a few places.

I recently bought a domain from namecheap (http://namecheap.com) they seem pretty good. They do free domain transfers with the purchase of another year. I saw they charge $17.72USD for 2 years on a .co.uk (2 years is the minimum) I don't really know pricing on .co.uk

Hopefully that helped.

Don't forget downtime ...You don't get downtime when you transfer domains, unless something goes horribly wrong!

You may find you can transfer domains for free if you don't want to add additional years to the registration. I don't know the specifics for .co.uk but that's certainly true here in Australia, I transfer .com.au's into our master reseller account at our own registrar every few days for no charge.

Cheers,

Brian
