View Full Version : Change of IP for domain - how will it happen - Godaddy?

I just transferred my own web site - domain1.com - from another hosts server to a server of mine. I should have done this long ago but moving accounts between servers is so ....., well, you know.

domain1.com got another IP at the new server. It still uses the same nameservers but those got other IPs as well as the domains which owns the nameservers, domain2.com, were moved over as well. I know that this is a special arrangement but that's how it is. I don't want to come with a longer explanation of why here.

I have changed the IPs for the nameservers of domain2.com at godaddy, and are now waiting for it to propagate. But what about the dedicated IP for domain1.com? - When will the change in IP for this domain take place?

I'm asking because there are no option at godaddy to change IP for a domain - only IPs for nameservers. Am I correct in believing that it will happen automatically? Or will the account have to be terminated on the old server before the change happens?

Hoping for some input.

Thanks
John

the IP of the domain is deteremined by who hosts you and what they set the IP to in their DNS Zone.

Thanks, but that was not my questions. I owns my own servers so I've given myself the IPs. I just wondered how the change of dedicated IP would take place as only the nameserver IPs can be edited at godaddy - not the dedicated IP of the domain. But it will probably happen automatically as usuall. - Anyway, thanks for responding :)

The IP of the site is provided by the name servers, not the registrar. This is automatic or not depending upon where the name servers are in relation to the site (same server?) and if actively responding. You might have to make manual entries in the name servers.
