Hello!

Im wondering if anyone uses DRAMS (http://www.dramsystem.com/) and if there are any opinions on it. I know AffordableDots.com and a few other big places use their script, but does anyone have any general comments? Thanks :)

-Matt

I should use it instead of PDQ. I'd like a bit more control over the site (I assume DRAMS gives one that ability). I keep meaning to get it and try it out.

Chicken,

Yeah, DRAMS is great. They're even willing to remove their copyright notice if ya email them. One concern is that they dont offer the "Three Pages Free" feature offered by eNom. Other than that I think they offer a reasonably priced package, and support via forums and HelpDesk have been speedy. Ill most likely order the system in a week or two and try it out. Ill be sure to let you know how it goes.

Drams was easy to install and setup. Their support is great and if you have a question or problem, they answer in a very timely manner. The only issue I would have is not with Drams, but with eNom. If eNom makes a change to their system without any announcements, Drams will not work. But this is the same issue that you would have with eNom’s API or their PDQ programs. All in all though, I don’t think you could go wrong by trying Drams.

I agree completely with Jim. I really like the flexibility that DRAMS offers, and the version 3 is very stable. The only problems I have run into recently occur when eNom makes changes without letting anyone know. Their support has been quick to fix these problems as they pop up.

So you mean when enom makes a change to the API (I am really reaching at the dumbed down way of saying what I mean due to not knowing what I'm talking about), your registration site goes down for the most part, and no one might know it until errr... there's an odd lack of domain sales?

Chicken -- its usually that part of the system stops working, not the whole thing. For instance, eNom recently instituted a policy that limits the number of domains you can look up to 5. Well, we had no idea until we started getting errors from people trying to look up more than 5 domains...

eNom usually notifies everyone there is going to be a change. Drams support then makes the changes to their program and notifies the users. The users then have to apply the patch. This last week, eNom made some changes without notifying anyone. Drams whois stopped working. Drams’ support staff became aware of the problem within a few minutes of the change – I guess because we started to file support tickets… Anyway, I am not sure what happened, but Drams started to work again without any patches. I can only speculate that the staff at Drams jumped all over eNom and eNom changed things back so our programs would work again…

The guy that created Drams must have a inside source at Enom because he got them to at least get it up to 30 lookups.

I think it is more like eNom is aware that more and more of their resellers are using DRAMS and so they have to be aware of what changes affect DRAMS.

Or, for those of us who aren't hosting comapanies, use it to create affiliations with hosting companies :)

is the dram system good for getting names when they are about to expire.. i need something fast to query their dbase when its 100% live... any clues?

I'd think you'd want a snap service for that purpose (?)

well i am usually too late when it comes to snap.. and i want to see if it can beat it.. i want something so that i can use it to query their live registration so that i can buy the moment its available.

There are two problems with that:

1. DRAMS only works with eNom's servers, so if the domain is registered through another registrar, you might miss it.

2. More fundamentally, DRAMS isn't designed to do what you want :).

A service I have used which has been pretty effective at getting domains, even ahead of snap is: dropwizard (http://www.dropwizard.com/), they are more expensive, but you only pay if you win.

even namewinner.com has proven faster than snapnames.com in some cases

but for some reason the lose .org domains for manual registrations

I'm splitting this thread, so it doesn't go too far off topic. Posts dealing with drop services are under the new thread labelled "Drop Script"
