Originally, a couple of years ago, I started buyng my domain names at Register.com. So a year ago when I got into web hosting, that is where I created my 2 private nameservers used in my reseller account. And that's where I login to make any IP changes for them.

Since then, I have registered about 15 or 20 domain names, but I have them over at Dotster (alot cheaper). But I still left one domain name over at Register.com because of the nameservers.

I'm not sure how this works. Frankly, I'd like to move everything over to Dotster and manage all things domain/DNS in one account. Can I move the nameservers over to another registrar just as I do with domain names?

Correct me if I am wrong - but I don't think the actual nameservers (ns1...) are "registered" with any particular registrar. When you set up ns1.nameserve.com or whatever you are using, you are simply making an association of an IP to a nameserver. That information gets propagated to other servers, etc.

The actual nameserver domain can be moved to a different registrar and it shouldn't make much difference.

Bear in mind that I am only saying this because it seems to make sense to me. We currently use VeriSign for all of our domain registration services.

OK, so if I have a hosting site registered at Register.com called abc.com, and I have created nameservers at Register.com called ns1.abc.com and ns2.abc.com, are you saying that if I move my domain name over to Dotster, my nameservers follow?

This is correct. You don't have to do anything special when moving domains with nameservers. The only thing you might want to pay attention to, is if the new registrar has provisions for things like changing the IPs and updating your nameservers (if you ever need to update them). Other than that, no problems.

Great. Then I will move my main site over to Dotster. Sure beats paying $35 per year at Register.com!

Yes. Once I moved my last domain I had with NetSol ($35/yr.) to my Enom account ($7), it was quite liberating! It's like buying one year and getting 4 years free, sort of... :D

Someone told me that register.com was like *the* best register. So the first 10 or so domains I registered there. Was a n00b then..

The one thing I will miss about them is that 24/7 I can pick up the phone and call them if I have a question/problem. During peak hours you used to have to wait on hold for 45 minutes but they're much better now - 10 minutes or so.

I have no idea if Dotster has phone support - never had a need to contact them...
