View Full Version : Alternate Roots?
Does anyone here bother with alternate roots, like new.net, or do you only register ICANN supported domains?

Personally, I have not been a big fan of these so-called "alternate roots", esp. new.net. What's the point of putting up something that up till now (after ALL THESE YEARS) is still invisible to the majority?

I'm anti-alternative roots! While I do understand a need to keep people in check, and the desire to not have only one of something (choice is good), I do not feel that new.net educates people enough as to how these domains work. I'd be interested in knowing how many people buy them only to figure out later that the majority of the world can't see their domain. Probably not a statistic that new.net will release ;)
LOL -- that is an interesting question, have any hosting companies ever had to explain to a customer that their domain won't work for 98% of the Internet and what was the reaction?
In general I agree, I think most attempts at alternative roots have been poorly thought out and do no have the right backing. Some like them because they feel alternate roots encourage ICANN to make more TLDs available -- but I am not sure that more TLDs are necessary.

This I would give a BIG YES. There's actually a VERY interesting article on this:

Cool article, I'll read it today and comment tonight.
