After reading this article:

I am curious about people's thoughts? If you go to register a .com domain name and find it is taken, will you register a another .com variant -- assuming it is available -- or will you shoot for another TLD?

.com is the tried and true TLD.

If you're trying to make it on the internet a ".com" will get you started imo. I'll even change my company name to make the domain name work.

A .com is the way to go IMHO. Everyone else seems to be able to associate a site with a .com better than a .net or .org site.

Register a different .com, unless you are running a non-profit organization (which *might* care less for driving traffic to competitors). Moreover, people VERY OFTEN simply assume that you are using a .com when you tell them your website or e-mail address.

If it's for a business I'll think of a different name.

I remember when I was sitting down with my business partner (and best friend) back in mid 2000 planning our business - we were sitting on the whois server and checking to make sure that the .com of our business name was available.

We eventually found one we liked that was available - so bam! we registered it and then went to our Fair Trading office to register the business when we got around to it :)

As for personal - I'd rather .com, but if .com is taken then .net or .org will suffice.

:offtopic: from that article...
Along with the growing number of domain names has come a rise in scams. How can these best be tackled?

I think the simplest answer is to educate the domain name owners or registrants. This would eliminate the vast majority of scams. The important thing to bear in mind is that the only GTLDs that are reachable by everyone on the internet are the Icann accredited domains - [almost] everything else is a scam.
That's a nice way of Jennie-Marie Idler, a general manager at domain specialist NeuStar, avoiding a lawsuit by New.net, heh. :D I wonder what the original text was that was edited (or if the 'almost' was added by the editors)?

I prefer .com's without a doubt. The problem is .com is for sure the most registered tld. So if I find a name I like, I go for the .net or .us versions when the .com isn't avalible.

I'll shoot for another TLD. I mean, betterlucktomorrow.com wasn't available so I took the .net ;)

Wow, looks like a runaway for the ol' standby: .com

These days, people register the domain name even BEFORE they start shooting the movie. ;) The same is true for company names as shaunewing has mentioned earlier in this thread.

The domain I wanted wasn't available so I went through about a hundred domains before I found a .com that was :yikes:

I genereally try to pick one I can get .com/net/org for.

General: .com
Buisness: .com/net (depending what you're doing)

when in doubt go for the .com. I still find most people who are new to the internet look for a .com even with your business card in hand that clearly shows a different extention.

Karen

Yeah, I've had people tell me... (for example, if the domain was Karen.net), so that's Karen.net.com? Ummmm no, just .net, no .com. If you have to explain it, then there's something wrong.

We dont have the .com or .net for unitedhosting.

We use our country code version of the domain. Although I would feel more comfortable with a .com as it really is "the standard" tld people look for, im fairly happy with how our domain works.

I do agree with Karen though. Dot com's are always the safest bet.

Unfortunatly .com are darn near always taken. I'm still trying to buy a few from people I own .net's for. :(
