Just wanted to say that they are AWESOME and free also. We use them very often ourselves and are VERY satisfied!
I'm confused. What is free on the site? I see domain name registration, but you have to pay for it (obviously). So what is free on the site? (Sorry, I must be blind...)
But not blind enough to see that they should give the site a once over for mistakes. For instance, just from a cursory glance of the home page,
MyDomain bAsic
and
exisiting
Tsk, tsk, sloppy work...

The Mydomain email service is something I hadn't seen before, but the services they've offered for free (for quite some time now), are:
MyDomain basic - Standard Management Tools
MyDomain Basic is a free web-based domain management service. You can use the MyDomain Basic service to point to your domain name to any existing web page and forward email sent to your domain to your exisiting email account! And MyDomain doesn't put ads on your domain redirection or emails! Also includes free dns for your domain names.
MyDomain Plus - Advanced Management Tools
For the advanced user, MyDomain Plus gives you all of MyDomain Basic features plus you can set hostnames, IP addresses, MX records and CNames - all for free and you still won't see any ads on your domain redirection or emails. Like the standard service, MyDomain Plus features also include free Standard/Stealth URL Forwarding, free Email Forwarding and free Title/Keywords/Description Meta Tags. Also includes free dns for your domain names.
Basically free DNS services which are actually pretty reliable. They've offered it for a long time, and it has always been free (though they used to say that MyDomain Plus was a paid service, you could try it for 30 days free).
Gotcha.
You've gotta have patience with us Canadians - the frost numbs our brains after a few -10 degree nights... :D

How do they make money?

From the beginning, although they said that the Plus Service was a paid service (you could try it for 30 days, but they never billed you which was a tad confusing), they didn't charge anything for anything. My guess was that they were building the membership base and eventually going to charge for the Plus Service (as they said they were going to), or charge for the both services. This never happened (and they've been up for as long as I can remember).
They started selling domains, which I suppose has been their source of income, and now offer an email service for $99/yr. I suppose this is what keeps them going. I could be wrong, however I think the original owners sold the site (and service) to someone at some point (probably a good move at the time), based on the user base.

Yeah, their service has always been great. I also wonder how they make their money.

Well, under the logo, they claim: Over 600,000 domains hosted.
Now that's not clients I realize, however that's a decent amount of domains to try to snag some registrations off of. Since I've been using Enom, I haven't had a reason to use Mydomain (but I used to). Enom does have a pretty nice set of DNS features, though this can create added support tickets.

That number probably refers to all of the domains they host for free. I still use them for my extra domain names, but since I got my enom account, I have been using their features. The comment in the other thread though (I'm still thnking about it) about enom having to write out the name on the envelope because it doesn't match up to the inside part is somewhat disturbing. I mean, even local plumbers and electricians have a nice system going where their envelopes, invoices and stuff match up. Why doesn't a big company like enom get something like this. It makes them look kinda flakey. I hope they are sufficiently funded and well managed to absorb the growth they've experienced recently.

Keep in mind that mydomain had a serious major outage within the last month, which one took my forum down, and two caused some major outages, pissed off alot of people. This was the first in a while, but a big wake up call for me.
Heres my position on it.
1 - Use more then one company for dns. The best I know off is enom which is dynamic DNS, can update in seconds.
2 - I still use my domain, but use another company as well
www.zoneedit.com, www.everydns.com
They both work well.
3 - Dont register Domains with the company you use dns for if they are the only ones. If they go down you go down, if you use multple ones you should be ok.
Just my thoughts
